An individual taxpayer who is paying for hair and nails cannot deduct cosmetology from their taxes.
A business - such as a theatrical company - that pays for these services in the course of business (such as to dress up actors before a play) - may deduct these as costs of business so long as their efforts are to earn profit. (They could not deduct these costs for "volunteer" shows.)
Maybe your friend confused cosmetics with workplace outfits? Employees who itemize (meaning homeowners mostly) may include the costs of work uniforms and the cleaning of work uniforms in their employee business expense, but:
1. The uniforms must not be suitable for every day wear outside of work.
2. There will be an initial limit on uniform deductions - combined with all other employee and miscellaneous deductions - are subject to a 2% (of total income) cut.
3. Cosmetics are generally not part of a uniform. However, in a recent government decision, professional body-builders may include "posing oil" as a business related expense. It may be rumor/humor, but California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is said to have given this decision a "thumbs up". |
