Can you claim your spouse as a dependent if they were unemployed the entire year at home with the children?

Yes, I stayed at home with the kids for 3 years and I was claimed as a dependent all three years, should be no problem.

I've been doing taxes for many years and I have a degree in Accounting and I specialized in taxes. You CAN NOT claim your spouse as a dependent. Your spouse is just that - your spouse. You are his/her spouse, not their parent. Working or not, you don't get an extra "dependent" because he/she was unemployed and staying home with the kiddos. It would be nice if we could, but unfortunately, all you get is to claim her as an exemption, just like yourself. Look it up in the 1040 instruction booklet or call one of the free tax help lines the IRS sponsors. If you want to take the advice that all the others have provided and try to claim your spouse as a dependent, try it and see how quickly Uncle Sam comes knocking on your door with his hand out... There is no place on the 1040 form that lets you claim an adult as a dependent child because they were a stay at home spouse. Good luck to you! =)

YES! And you should file as "Married Filing Jointly". This will net you a bigger refund or at the very least, give you less taxes to pay in.

I was a stay at home mom for years. I proved to my husband that he would NOT get a refund and have to pay taxes in if not for us. :)

A spouse is never claimed as a dependent. But you can file a joint return, and get an exemption and standard deduction for each of you, even if one person made all the income for the year.

I stayed home the whole past year because i was preggo and had a baby. my grandmother teaches the tax class at h&r block and works at a special, more expensive one (H&R Block prefered) or something like that. i called and asked her that exact question a few weeks ago, and she said no, we should file "married, filing jointly" to get the most $ back. we got a tax loan from H&R for $500 (the max) we were expecting to get about 5-6,000 back. (just our guess) we are getting 9,000 not including state taxes. also, H&R block said that they could add mine into his and they would give up another $500 that day. I do not know what they could have "added in" since I didn't earn a penny, but they did and said I was approved 10 minutes later. it has NOTHING to do with credit, i mean, they do not check your credit, but i chose not to get my $500 then because it would have been "extra money" in my mind and i would have shopped! so it can wait. but if you need $500-$1000 today go do a tax loan, all you need is your last paycheck stub. i am not going to file my taxes myself this year. i will wait until i have some income earned in this year and file for 07 next year when it's tax time. that's legal. and that's my suggestion. and DO NOT claim head of household! do NOT. that's what my grandmother said. and we did it her way and we are getting back way more than we thought. i see you got a lot of different opinions. mine is right, i have talked to a professional, and started the process. call H&R block and they will agree.

If she was unemployed and mooching off you all year long, then she was, most definately, dependant on you.
Seriously, though, the answer to the question is yes, you can.
