Can you deduct all college costs?
Can you wite off the entire tuition that was paid out over the course of the year? I thought I remembered when doing her taxes that they capped it at 4k and then with some sort of formula it ended up being only 2500 of a deduction. Tuition was more than 4k but it is in the form of a loan (in the students name) and it is being paid back when she finishes school????

Doctor Deth
read the instructions for the tax forms

the loan itself has nothing to do with the tuition

tuition is tuition, no matter how it is paid for

no, you are issued a 1098 T to show the amount of tuition you are allowed to claim and yes there are limits to the amount you can claim

RUSerious
You can deduct or receive a credit for college tuition only. Books, meals, living expenses, etc., are not deductible. If you did in fact actually pay tuition, then the college (University) will more than likely send you a form 1098-T sometime next year and hopefully on or before 1/31/2011.

All of the education credits have limits, but they're different for each. The tuition and fees deduction has a cap on the possible tax savings.

Look at the form and instructions.

Paid with a loan is treated the same as paid out of pocket.
