Can you file a joint tax return if you aren't married?
Me and my Boyfriend have been living together for 5 years. We have a joint account. We are pratically married. Additional Details My reasoning behind not getting married yet is just that I dont think that marriage can put alot of unwanted pressure on a relationship. Love your answer BeeJee....Thanks for being honest
Aw heck, Just kidding. If you have a legitimate reason for avoiding matrimony (that isn't illegal!) you should be able to file jointly.
Notice: I don't know the law and have zero tax law knowledge so don't do anything rash. ask a tax expert.

"Practically married" isn't the same as actually married, so no, you can't file a joint return.
If you are common law married, then you are legally married and could file a joint return. But most states don't even allow common law marriage any more, and in the ones that do, a lot more is required than just having lived together for a length of time.

You cannot legally file together.

You are single until congress establishes a filing status for unmarried filing jointly. If you want the benefit of joint rates, get the paper.
