Besides needing your W2s and 1099s (they are not mailed out until 2009) your filing status (married, single, etc.) is determined by your status on Dec 31.

No. The IRS won't accept returns until January and, even then, you have to wait until you receive all your W2s which don't have to be out until 1/31.

Not really. If you aren't working in December and already have your W-4s and 1099s, you can. You can't file until you get the tax forms from your employers or customers, and they don't have to send them until January.
