No, something's wrong.
If there's nothing withheld, then there's nothing to be refunded.
The IRS has to have taken your money from you before they can give it back. |

Earned Income Credit (and there may be other ways). Basically the government rewards you for working rather than being on public assistance. When I was married with kids, our income was less than $25,000 and we would normally get something like $3000-$3500 back - which was everything deducted from Federal Withholding plus Earned Income Credit. |

my guess is tax credits. Some people will get more back than they pay in due to earned income tax credits. I don't think it's fair but then I pay in taxes.
The other option is that they cheated. |

That is why there is no such thing as true poverty in the US. That happened to us a few years ago. |

There is an earned income credit for low income people with dependents. You can get back more than you pay. You can actually fill out a form with your employer and receive the money back with each paycheck. |

The Earned Income Tax Credit and certain other credits can give you more back than you pay in. |

Yes, if ur over 25, no children, and make less than $12,000 a year you get EIC or if you have dependents you get it. I was a full time college student & only worked part time, made under 10k. And my employer didn't take any federal taxes out of my pay, but I'm getting back several hundred dollars, because of deductions & credits. |

Well...the person on disability isn't eligible for any refund at all.Disability benefits aren't taxable, therefore they paid nothing in.If they are getting a refund and their only source of income is SS,then they are committing fraud.EIC is only for those who have an earned income,SS isn't an earned income. |

Normally, you can't get back more than you paid into the system.
This is a question for an accountant, though it is possible they are committing tax fraud. |
|

Shmesh

No, you should only get a refund if you make money. Otherwise these people should be applying for welfare. Not falsifying there taxes. |

If some one is receiving money back and didn't pay any in it's fraud. |

Look at the laws people... There are deductions for EVERYTHING... I paid out $1600 in taxes on $25000. Because of the economy, my wife lost her job. We qualified for earned income (Yes, the goverment pays you to raise your own children..) and additional child deductions. We got back much more than what we paid in. I use turbo tax and it is up to date with all credits and deductions... It is 100% possible to get more than you pay. Is it right? Point of view... Is it legal? Absolutely. |
