Yahoo Troll | Can you get in touble if you dont file a tax return?? |
I did not file a tax return for 2006 but was due a refund of approximately 1100 for federal and 200 for north carolina state. Is there a penalty for not filing?? If i do file, will I get my refund from federal and state?? I'm I in trouble?? |

If you had a refund on your federal there is no penalty, but you don't get your money either. For 2006, you can still file and get the refund. |

If you possess a social security number, you're in trouble. Your records will be checked, IRS will take what is owned them plus the penalty charge and return the excess if any to you. |

You only get in real trouble is when you owe money and do not file. Now, in your situation, get your butt in gear and get your money for 2006 both from the IRS and North Carolina. You still have time. By the way, you loaned your 2006 refunds to the IRS and the state of North Carolina for free. They will not pay you any interest. Start getting into the habit of filing your taxes every year right after you get all of your W2 forms. Quit shortchanging yourself. |

You can still file your 2006 return.. Here is a resource to file your prior year taxes online.

And you would not get into trouble.. but you would have to pay penalties and interest to the IRS if you owe them money. Plus your financial life could be messy if you do not file your taxes for several years |

I don't think so since they owe you. It was dumb not to file. You might be able to still file though. |

If the IRS owes you, you will not get into trouble, but if you don't file within three years, you will lose your refund - that is your penalty. That means you have to file your return by 4/15/10.
State differ from one another, so not sure what your state will do. |

As others have correctly noted, you can claim your federal refund as long as you file by 4/15/2010. There will be no penalties charged. Contrary to what Gary wrote, you will receive interest. |

The penalty and interest is based on the amount of tax due as shown on the return. Since there was no tax due, there will be no penalty or interest. You simply shortchanged yourself.
The penalty is the filing penalty and is based on a percentage of the amount due on the return so it is $0 if there is no tax due. |

Ummmm, YEAH! they're the federal gov, fella! You can file taxes late, but they will likely charge you a penalty for filing late....sometimes if it hasn't been that long and they owe you, they'll just pay you (and you were out the money for an extra year). I would file if I were you...not the kind of trouble you wanna hassle with for a little $...you DON'T want to end up on their radar! |
