Can you make corrections to already-submitted taxes?
I did my taxes last night using taxact.com - I already received an email confirming that my taxes were received and approved. However, today I received another 1099 form in the mail for some miscellaneous income that was sent to my old address. Can I edit my submission somehow to include this new form?

Yes, you file a 1040X. Very, very, important note about filing the 1040X however.

Wait until the IRS has completely finished all your taxes before you try filing the 1040X, or else the IRS will essentially ball up and explode in a crazy amount of confusion.

Don't file the 1040X until you are absolutely 100% positive they have finished all your other returns.

Yes, you can amend your tax return.

Yes, file an amended return!

I don't believe you can change it after you submit it. I jumped the gun last year and filed my taxes and then received a form from school stating how much I had paid the previous year. It was such a small amount it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. If the 1099 is small, it may become unnoticed, however, to be on the safe side, I would call the IRS

There should be a way to do an amended return on their web site. I will mention this. The same thing happened to me last year, I got a 1099 for about $12.00 interest on a checking account. I never bothered to do anything since I knew it wouldn't change anything and I got my money and had no problems.

I don't know how many people out there know this but you can refile any tax return up to 3 years, my ex-wife and I finally went to a reputiable tax person which I recommend and it had been two years since we had filed with H & R Block which i don't recommend, and he got us money they didn't pick up back for us!!! Funny thing was we had the taxes files the year after the H & R Block incident with another reputiable tax prepaer and he got us money back from that tax return as well!!! So to answer your question again yes you can change and refile your taxes for up to three years. The important thing to keep in mind is that you file on time you don't want peanlties and I made a mistake (Against me) once and the IRS found it and sent me back more money back so sometimes the system works! Best of luck to ya...

Yes. You need to file amended returns for both federal and state. I did the same thing as you. I e-filed both returns on 1/25/08 -- they were accepted. Then, today I received a 1099 Interest Income statement from my bank. I quickly prepared Amended tax returns and mailed them. I am receiving a little more on my refund, but it will take 8 jto 12 weeks for the additional amount to be mailed by check. Good luck! :)

So, how come you forgot to report the 1099-misc income in the first place???

The schedule C is based on your records which should have already included the income.
