Can you still file taxes after the deadline?

Barkley Hound
Of course. In fact if you do not owe any money there is no penalty.

There is only interest and penalties if you owe money. If there is a refund due you have 3 years to file before you lose it.

If someone can point to a specific place where it states that there is a penalty if you owe no money please point it out to me. Interest is on unpaid amounts. A penalty is added when you do not pay by the deadline. Where is the penalty for not filing?

Bad Kitty!
Yes. You can file taxes anytime. If possible, file for an extension. But you can do that after the deadline, too; there will probably be a bit more of a penalty. But the penalties are much, much worse of you don't file taxes at all!

Sorry, penalties do only apply if you owe money. The only people I know who don't file on time are those who owe and can't pay, so I didn't even consider you not having filed when you have money coming to you. Usually those are the first folks in line with their tax return!

htuch2000
If you file for an extension, you can file late BUT you still have to PAY what you owe by the April deadline else you will owe penelties and late fees.

bpl
Sure you can. You must know that if you owe money, there is a penalty. If you need too, file an extension.

yes you can this year you have until the 17th of April which is two extra days. and if you don't owe money the IRS don't care they actually hope that you don't so they wont have to pay out after three years. But if you owe money get an extension if your gonna be late because they will fine you heavily if they you don't.

Tom A
Of course but if you don"t file an extension you could be fined if you owe money

lennie1226
yes, but if you don't file an extension, you will get hit with penalties. I saw that somene said you can file the extension anytime. That is incorrect..you must file the extension by the due date. If you file it afterwards, it's ignored.

If you owe IRS money, they will charge a penalty and interest, if you file late.

If you overpaid the IRS and expecting a refund, You are OK if you file late.

Mariposa
Yes. If you owe money, there will be a penalty though. Either way, it is better to file then late instead of never.

Certainly you can, but if you owe taxes, then interest and/or penalties will possibly be added onto the tax you owe. You have up to 3 years from the original deadline to file a tax return where you are owed a refund, and forever if you owe tax.

Yes, you may and be subject to a late filing penalty. Better to submit the form for an extension and file later without penalty.

JSB
Only if you file for an extension, first.
