Can you tell me what you think about the car tax going up to £400 next year?

Additional Details
my husband has i classic car it is a 5.7 but if you think he will only drive that car about 10 times in a year i dont think thats right when you get 1.0 that is driving around all day everyday its crazy

BRIAN S
If the vehicle was registered before 2001, the changes don't apply. If registered after2001, its not a classic car.

I find it wrong - the extra money will not be going towards better roads, environment or anything like that. It will more than likely be heading into stupid things like the Iraq war or another Millenium Dome....the list goes on :-(

micvay47
I think you will find that the new tax affects cars registered after 2001 so you will pay the same as anyone with a car over 1540cc go to the gov uk website for information

Complete waste of time as a method of reducing exhaust emissions. That is what it is supposed to do, isn't it.

The only way to do that is to ban such vehicles but the motor industry would not allow it and you would get calls from the human rights brigade.

Have a gaz guzzler is not socially unacceptable yet. Not like smoking or drink driving is. It is seen as a right to have a thumping great V8 and so may it last.

FM is going away.
It's going up to £400 for 4x4 drives and high emission cars. If your's isn't in this range you got nothing to worry about.

Last year there was a freak snowstorm in Cornwall and we all got snowed in, including people stuck on the a30 in Bodmin all night in horrendous conditions and the police was asking for 4x4 drivers to come help rescue people. My other half has an old landrover which I have never been so pleased to see that night when he can to get me as my car couldn't make it out of my work car park and I had been stuck there for hours. People who live in the country need 4x4's (not all of us, I don't so I don't have one!) My baby is perfectly safe in my ordinary car. However, when I go to Rock in the summer and you see all the visitors/hooray henrys from London to their little place on the coast in their shiney Chelsea tractors that they are completely unable to drive or in particular reverse you can see that something does need to be done. These vehicles simply are not needed in the city, never go off road and put pedestrians at risk. They had a little clip of London on TV the other day and almost every car was a 4x4!!
This tax means that rich people can polute - if you have paid 40k + for a car £500 is not going to make a difference but if you need a people carrier because you have a large family it might. My in laws have 5 children between them and £400 is alot of money for them to pay to taxt their people carrier but they cannot get them into a normal small engine car. The taxes collected are unlikely to be used to help the environment or to pay to maintain roads etc.
I am not sure what the answer is but a hike in road tax is going to make little difference. They are trying to tax us off the road but not offering any alternatives. They need to think again and stop going on about 4x4's some people need them and this wont effect the people who don't!

BNP. Protect Great Britain
Its another rob from the middle class and give to the lazy b@stard immigrants.

I think it is a gimmick, unfortunatley someone who has paid 40k for a 4x4 is not going to be put off. We just need to exert moral pressure on people to do the right thing and if you don't need one, don't buy one. Personally whenever I see a 4x4 I usually think "w**ker" , works for Porshes too!

Valmiki
I think it's all wrong.

What we are saying, is that those that have sufficient money are permitted to damage the environment more than those who do not have sufficient money.

It would be more correct for the Government to permit only vehicles which could achieve a certain MPG figure, combined with the emission legislation.

This would mean that emissions would be covered, and use of fuel would be covered.

Only problem is that Jeremy Clarkson, and all those who like to flaunt their wealth would oppose it. (I suppose that would even include supposedly responsible people like "2 Jags Prescott, who wouldn't be seen dead in anything that does more than 15 MPG).

I support the concept of taxing the high polluting engines. However, it would look better if the Chancellor were to spend the money raised on worthwhile "green" projects like saving the rainforest.

As it's for GAS GUZZLERS I fully agree with it.
