mary b | Can you work tax free? |
I have been offered a job through a church where the employer says that I cannot be charged taxes and so I don't have to claim them. I feel like this is not true, and need to have that 1099 form so I can file returns on this income. Am I right? Or wrong? |

What they are telling you isn't true - your payments would be taxable. You can still file a tax return on it though, whether you get a 1099 or not.
They are probably a tax-exempt organization - that doesn't mean that the money earned by people working for them is tax-exempt. |

If you are a member of a religious order that has taken a vow of poverty you will pay no taxes. Of course, you won't be paid either; all of your income would be paid to the religious order who would then provide for your basic needs.
If you are just working for a church as an employee, they MUST withhold Federal and State income taxes. A few don't pay FICA or withhold it. In that case, you'd have to file Schedule SE with your return and pay the SE tax yourself at 15.3% of your gross income, just as if you were an independent contractor. You'd get an adjustment to your gross income for half of the SE tax paid so that would lower your income tax burden slightly. |

The church employer is totally wrong, and you are right. I have no idea where they got the idea that you can't be charged taxes and don't have to claim them. The only way that I can think of would be the church not giving you a 1099, but they would be breaking the law by doing that. |

They will not take out the taxes, but you will most likely have to file self employed. Which means at the end of the year you will still owe taxes on the income. |

I disagree with everyone else's answers. Your church may be correct, sort of.
Are you an ordained minister working for the church? In that case, the church would not withhold any federal taxes from your wages, because your earnings are not subject to federal income, social security, or Medicare tax withholding.
Sadly, that doesn't mean you're off scott free. You still have to pay federal taxes through quarterly estimated tax payments, just not through paycheck withholdings. And you should still receive a W-2 after year end, and you still need to file your taxes.
Even if you're not a minister, and you're just an ordinary employee of the church, the church can choose not to withhold social security and Medicare taxes from your wages (but it still has to withhold federal income taxes). You would still have to pay those taxes through quarterly estimated tax payments. |

if you make under $3000 you dont have to pay taxes.... the only one exempt from taxes at the church with income of more than $3000 is the pastor |
|

Yes you are taxed exempt because you are working with a non-profit organization. |
