Canada ONLY: What if I refuse to pay My income tax?
Hello everyone,
Im a resident of New-Brunswick, canada, and so this question applies only to canadians.
Ive just calculated my income tax and it seems I owe them about 1600$ (because they never deduct enough from employment insurance)
So anyways, I called the number for information and asked ''what if I refuse to pay?Can this be deducted from my employment insurance''
''oh, well of course not''
''can it be deducted from my regular salary?''
''No, of course not!''
''can I go to jail''
''well no...''
So I asked her ''why the hell woul I pay then?'' and she stuttered a bit and started saying things like ''oh well, you HAVE to or else,...They'll call you and ...interest will add up''

But I came to the conclusion that the only thing they can do is deduct it from next year's income tax, and if I refuse to arrange any other form of payment, theres nothing much they can do about it

Now I need to know if this is true.So Knowledgeble canadians, help me out please

If you should get a refund, they can withhold it. If you should get the GST rebate cheques every three months, they can withhold those. For small amounts, they won't do much more. But for larger amounts, they *can* seize assets, freeze bank accounts, etc. They can also report the non-payment to the credit bureaus, which lowers your credit scores.

But it is in your best to pay, because they add a penalty to the owed amount, plus interest. It adds up really fast.

Remember that when you get EI or any pay cheque, they are deducting as if that is your only income for the year. This happens if you change jobs too. If you are worried, you can have them withhold more or keep some in savings.

Yes, they can send Requirements to Pay (garnishments) to your bank, and yes, they can even send one to Employment Insurance, and your employer.

As for jail, that is just reserved for tax evaders and those who refuse to file. You can make an arrangement on the telephone to pay your taxes.

Here is the info from CRA's site:

You may also make a payment arrangement using a touch tone telephone through our TeleArrangement service by calling our toll-free number at 1-866-256-1147. To use this service you will need to provide your social insurance number, your date of birth, and the amount you entered on line 150 from your last return for which you received a Notice of Assessment. TeleArrangement is available Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern time.

In addition, you can also make a payment arrangement by calling one of our agents toll free at 1-888-863-8657. This service is available Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..

They can send a requirement to pay to your employer, your bank, anywhere you have investments.

My GF lives in Moncton and is an attorney [as am I]. They can garnish your wages if they so choose. They can also just wait till you have money coming back to you and get it then. Bear in mind that a non-pay penalty will be assessed and interest will run on both the taxes due and the penalty until paid. Don't screw up with them over $1600 as they will put you on an audit list and give you hell forever. Also it is your responsibility to assure that your employer is taking enough out of your pay to cover 100% of your tax bill.

Yes, they can deduct it from your pay. Yes, they absolutely WILL deduct it from any future refund. Yes they will deduct it from any GST cheques. And yes, if you flat out refuse to pay, they can and will charge you with tax evasion, a criminal offense.

Pay your taxes like everyone else.
