Child care provider passed away?
Ok, so the woman caring for my children in 2008 passed away last summer, I paid about 3200 for the year for my 2 children, how am I going to claim this without her SS#, she did not have much family and how will someone know to claim it for her on her taxes.
Additional Details
She did not have a lot of family, a 20 year old son who is staying with friends now, I know even though she passed (very unexpected) she still has to file.

If you can't get her ss# from her family, then file by mail and attach an explanation of why you don't have it, and her name and address.

Unless you have a receipt for the money you spent, you will have difficulty claiming the deduction, and the amount will probably never appear on her income tax.

Your canceled checks, bank statements, Money orders or whatever instruments you used to pay her are how you claim it. Deposit into her account or the negotiating institution of those instruments is how her family or interested persons claim it for her. Her estate, no matter how limited, has this responsibility.

You can claim it just disclose the fact that she is dead and provide her name. Call the IRS for more details in how to do it.

Speak to a tax specialist. You don't want to not claim it because you'll get in lots of trouble and I"m sure you would like to get a nice return back.

You do not need her ss# as long as you have the cleared checks that clearly state it was for childcare
