me-wa | Could a family with 2 adults and 2 kids live comfortably on $3200 a month? |
This is after taxes are taken off of the paycheck.. so net income. |

Depends on which area of the country you live in. In most of the major cities, I would have to say you would be struggling a bit but it would depend upon what your living expenses are and your definition of comfortable. I've lived in Alberta, B.C., Toronto, and Montreal over the years and moved my family to SE New Brunswick and wouldn't consider anywhere else. We have a beautiful home with some land, a great nearby school for our boys, they are now fluent in both Offical languages and we live very comfortably on the income you mentioned. |

Funny how you post a question in a Canada category and have half the responses refer to American situations.
I think $3200/mo can work depending on a few factors:
1) what city are you in (housing cost). Kapuskasing you'd be living like kings, Toronto is not going to have you in a nice place.
2) is one parent working and the other home with the kids? In Toronto we pay $1,300 monthly for daycare for two kids.
Those are the two biggest costs we face, so if you can handle both then you should be ok. |

As others have noted, this really depends on where the family is living.
Statistics Canada publishes a low income cut-off every year, based on after tax income.
According to them, in 2006, the LICO for a family of four ranged from 21,731 to 33,221, depending on whether you lived in a small area or a big city. I would say that $3,200 a month would probably not be a comfortable living, especially as you approach larger urban centres. |

2 adults can live fine for a month with $1500 in Canada as I have experienced so $3200 is good for 4 people. |

It depends on the level of comfort you are used to and the cost of living in your area.
Kids tend to ensure cash will go far faster than it did before they arrived too!! |

$3200/month and you will be just getting by. Imagine a three bedroom house or apartment. That will set you back from $1000-1400 depending on where you reside. At the low end of the scale that will leave $2200. Deduct Utilities $75 and Telephone/Cable/Internet @150/month. You now have $1975 remaining. Let's say that you like Entertainment (movies)($9.00X4)=$36 and eat out once per week ($60X4)=$240 so now you have $1699 remaining. If you lease a car you are looking at $400/month plus insurance of approximately $250 so now you are down to $1044. The calculate the cost of the food that you are eating...(we have an 18month old, 4 year old, my wife, myself, and a grandmother and we spend $100/week on groceries) so based on that $400/month for food at home and you are down to $644. Your kids depending on how old they are will require a bus pass...so 2 bus passes at (2X$45)=$90 and now you are down to $544. Then there are any extra costs like clothing and eating out during work, Tim Horton's coffees and other miscellaneous expenses...so in effect you will be lucky to save $200-$300/month assuming the scenarios are roughly correct. Hope this helps. |

Depending on where you live. I would say yes unless you live downtown in a HUGE city (New York, LA, Ect)
I live fine of 2,300/mo. I own a 3 brdm house and a 07 car. I have 2 kids and a wife. It's what you do with your money and how you spend it. I live in W. Columbia, SC. Houses are cheap for what you get paid. Great cost of living vs income ratio here! |

it depends where they live, if it's rural America probably so, but there is no way a family of 4 can live on only 38k a year in a large city |
