Your tax returns have nothing to do with your hospital bill - or any delinquent bill at this point. |

Federal Refund: Only if it is a bill from a hospital operated by the Federal government such as a military hospital, VA hospital, or USPHS hospital.
State Refund: Some states DO allow medical debts to be recovered via offset of your state refund. |

If you paid $3000 in taxes, and your tax liability is about $3000, then you won't get much refund. A refund is only for the amount you overpaid, so if you only overpaid by $200, that's all you'd get.
Your unpaid medical bills wont have any impact on this. The IRS does not withhold tax refunds for private debts, only for unpaid child support, defaulted student loans, and back taxes from previous years. |

So far only "Dances with Aardvarks" has given you a completely correct answer. |

the only way that you will get your return money held from you is if you owe the government money.
i don't know your gross pay so i can't tell you what you should get back based on 3000 paid in taxes. |

And your income was how much? |

Any deductions that would be taken from your refund would NOT show during the filing process. You would only see money taken AFTER you have filed (don't expect them to take it for private bills).
If you are getting a small refund or owe money that is because you did your exemptions CORRECTLY during the year and you did not have as much taken from your checks during the year. |

Your ER bills don't have anything to do with your tax returns being paid to you. |

No, that will have no bearing on your tax return. The only thing that matters on your return is what you put on there. |

Your ER bill will not count against you, to better understand how your return comes to 200 back or you owing 100 you should print off your form 1040 from the websites you used. This will give you a breakdown of where all the money is going |

no because it does not have nothing to do with the IRS |

No, your tax refund (if available to you) would not be held up by unpaid emergency room visits. |

I do not think so. |

Your emergency room bills should not have anything to do with what you will owe the irs. Those are private debts. I didn't start to see a nice refund until I got married and had kids. If you are single, then you are lucky not to owe anything or receive anything. |

I don't think they can garnish your tax return.....
They can't even garnish your wages until you've been taken to court and you are ordered to pay.
It's hard to tell unless we had all of your information regarding your credits and income and such like that.Finish filing and see what happens. |

Your tax return certainly can be attached by your creditors - I'd get those bills paid off if I were you. |

Not unless they get a court order. |

No, private debt can't be taken from your tax return.
Go to H&R Block, they'll get you the max return possible. |

I'm sure it's possible. Have you received any notices to go to court for your unpaid hospital bills? My ex did. They haven't taken out his taxes, though....but they might be able to if there's a lien against you. Call about your bill and see if you can make payments or if they can offer you a lower settlement price.
P.S. Some poeple are saying they can't take it out...I'm not sure. My ex had his taxes taken out for child support....I'm not sure about hospital. They may be able to deduct your wages, too. I would take care of it ASAP. Maybe you can pay it off with your tax return anyway. If you owe $3,000....tell them you can pay such and such amount and see if they'll settle with it. Otherwise...work out a payment plan to pay off the entire bill over time. As long as they're receiving regular payments, they probably won't bother you.
Okay...I got four thumbs down. Don't listen to me! |

Dances with Arvardarks is correct however, if you owe the feds and you are in a bankruptcy you have to contact them and make them aware. That way they won't offset your taxes. If you a VA Hospital you need to have set up a payment plan at least 30 days prior to filing your taxes. If they have that in place they won't offset your taxes either. |
