Council Tax, Overpayment.?
I have recently been informed that my council tax band has been wrong since 1st April 2005.
I have been paying band 'C' when I should have been paying band 'B'.
Will I get a rebate, if so, what form will this take.
Will it be in the form of lower bills for a while or a cheque or some other means of recompense ?

you should get a nice fat cheque off them but be prepared for a wait as they tend to be quicker at taking money off folks than handing it back out!

When it is the other way around and you owe them money they take you to court. The court can ask for court costs which are about £3 and the council tax people can and do ask for council tax costs of £97. The council tax people also demand that you pay what you owe in full within one week. If I were you I would demand that the council tax people pay me what they owe me in full withing a week and with my own costs of £97 added to the total sum. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

You should get a cheque once they've sorted the mess out. Don't hold your breath.

Hi
When it happened to me they credit it to my account as I pay by direct debit. Ring them up and they will ask you how you want it

You will get the money reimbursed. The council should calculate the diffrence between band B and C and the period over which you paid this and return it as a one off payment

It may be quite a considerable amount and the council should offer you a one off payment to make amends. I know this has happened with my electric bill in the past where I've paid too much. But it might depend on the local council and they might just reduce/stop your payments for the next few months. Best to contact your local council and find out if you have options and then chose the most convenient for you.

Dogs Major
It should be a cheque - see the website below for a useful detailed explanation.

depends how much it is but normally they just deduct it from future council tax bills.
