Amy1982 | Council Tax (am I entitled to get it back)? |
My father invested in a second property and asked me if I would like to live in it rent free until he decided what to do with it, I ended up living there for 4 years. For all of the 4 years I lived there I paid council tax, but I wasn't working at the time, and didn't really realise I shouldn't be paying it. Does anyone know if I am entitled to get this money back. I wasn't on any kind if benefit at the time, but I have all the receipts from what I had paid.
Any advise would be much appreciated. |

you could try but i doubt you will get anything unless you can prove your exact income for those years and even then your local council will probably be really difficult
ring their revenue section and ask someone |

If you were not paying it then the landlord (your father) should have been . However you lived rent free so that probably complicates things a bit
The main thing to bear in mind is that if you have over paid any tax for whatever reason then you will get it back
My guess is that there should have been council tax paid on the property with the 25 % discount for single occupancy . You may be due some sort of rebate becuase you were not working so you need to contact the rates office and ask for the relevant form to claim back the money |

I was actually speaking to my Council re Council Tax Benefit earlier today and from this conversation you will not get it back!
I phoned the Council on behalf of my daughter to get a form for her to claim this benefit. I was given several options from a recording and told to give the name and address and a form would be sent out.
As it didn't arrive I phoned this morning and was told "because my daughter didn't leave the request on the telephone herself, any benefit awarded would be backdated to the first Monday after the completed form was received at the Council".
Had she made the call herself the benefit would have started the first Monday after the call!
How mad is this |

I don't know about ALL the council tax you paid, but if you were the only occupant of the house, then you should have received the single person's allowance. That is, a single person occupying a property is entitled to a 25 per cent discount on council tax payments.
You may well be able to get that portion back. |

I think you can only get it back if you were on Job Seekers Allowance. |

I doubt it if you we not on benifits at the time. You must have had some sort of income to be paying it each month whether that be savings or money from family. In that case they wouldn't refund it. If however you were paying it by a loan or some borrowed money you may stand a chance. |

I doubt it, you would have had to have claimed council tax benefit to have not paid it. |

You wouldn't be entitled to Council Tax Benefit unless you were claiming Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance. Even then I'm not sure what the score is with refunds but as you wasn't claiming benefits you would not have been entitled anyway. |
