Sppurr | Council tax discount? |
I am moving into a new flat soon on my own and therefore will be entitled to 25% discount. I know i have to write off to the council with a form for this and im just wondering how long this can normally take? Will i be looking at paying the full amount for the first month or 2 until they sort it? Will i get a refund if i pay the full amount for a few months? Thanks |

They are allowes 12 weeks to process an application, allow for this and be prepared to pay the first 12 weeks at 100%, you should then get reimbursed for anything extra you have paid. |

Contact your council now and tell them what date you are moving in and that you will be the sole occupier over 18. They will send you a declaration that basically says "I am the sole occupier over 18...." which you put the date and your signature on and they will start you a new account with the discount in place.
"N.B If you opt to pay monthly make sure you keep up the payments. If you miss or are late with one payment they will demand you pay the rest of the year off in ONE LUMP SUM straight away. (At best you'll get one warning/reminder letter). Nice eh"
...If you are late making a payment, you WILL be sent a reminder. If you do not make the payment, you are often sent a second reminder. After that you would be sent a final notice removing installment payments and asking for the balance to be paid in full - however you can negotiate this if you have a good reason for being late paying, if you do not pay, you would be issued a summons and a liability order would be granted. Then they will accept monthly payments on the summonsed balance, but you would have to pay the court costs (around £70) which would be included in the balance.
I know that wasn't your question, you sound perfectly willing to pay yours, but I wanted to clarify that point. If you find any difficulty in paying for a month, contact the council immediately and they can often arrange to accept a late payment or even reschedule your arrears across the rest of the council tax year. We have some leeway, but people don't call and don't ask. That's why we often get our first contact from them after a bailiff has called. |

find out who (if its changed) your council is, find the adress and telephone number and call em, also check their website.
best to google. |

- Give them a ring just after you've moved in (find the number on the net / phone book).
- Tell them your new address and date you moved in.
- They send you forms.
- You complete and send them back.
- They eventually send you the bill.
You should not have to pay the full amount for a couple of months etc, as they don't like doing refunds. Just wait until you get your bill.
N.B If you opt to pay monthly make sure you keep up the payments. If you miss or are late with one payment they will demand you pay the rest of the year off in ONE LUMP SUM straight away. (At best you'll get one warning/reminder letter). Nice eh
Good luck in your new flat! |

I think the best thing is to ring the ocuncil up and ask them-they will tell you.
We went from from one parent working full time to going pat time, so obviously we get huge help with our council tax.
When my partner had to cut his working hours down, we just stopped paying the full amount, but we did ring them up to explain why.
Also, check to see whether you're entitled to any other benefits, if you're on your own and struggling with your bills etc, there is actually help out there.
Good luck on your new flat and hope everything goes brilliantly! xoxo |

Go to your Council Tax office now and ask for a Housing Benefit Form.
The sooner you fill it in the quicker you will get a reply. Someone will come round and look at your flat after you have moved in.
Think they are a lot quicker than they used to be. Allow 12 weeks to be on the safe side. If entitled to Benefit it will be backdated to the day you moved in. |

It's unlikely you will get a refund but what they will do is make adjustments to the payments over the remaining term. |

Can you pop into your local council tax office? My mum just went into the office and sorted it out when I moved away from home (then they usually make a mistake and you have to go in again). At least then you can ask them your questions and you will know it is being sorted. |
