It depends on how many adults are in the property.
If it is only your mother and yourself there that are over 18, your mother (presuming it is her house and she is the one registered to pay council tax) can claim a 25 per cent reduction if you are a full time student.
You will need a certificate from your college stating you are a student - they are use to being asked for this - and you will need to send it to your local council with a covering letter stating that you have been a student in full time education since (-insert date-) and you are applying for a student disregard. |

Nope students don't pay council tax. While I've been a student I lived with a friend who worked and because I was a student he also got the single person 25% discount because as far as the council tax is concerned it was as if I didn't live there. In your situation your parents I would assume are paying council tax anyway. |

Your parents will have to pay for that. Depending on financial circumstances they may be able to get a discount but you yourself should not pay. You are not the householder and it is the householders responsibility |

The tax is on the property and not the occupants. If there were other salary or wage earners living in the house such as sons and daughters then the owner would probably want a contribution from them. |

Only if 100% of the occupants of a house / flat are students does the council tax benefit for students apply.
If any member of that household is not a student then all the council tax must be paid.
As your an adult its very reasonable for you to pay your share.
Most students can fit in part time jobs along side the full time course (Many full time courses are in fact only 25-35 hours a week, considered Part time in job terms).
Are you paying the market rate for your rental share of the home? I suspect your family are already subsidizing this for you. Including food and all bills a realistic cost per month could easily be around £700 (plus) per month.
I know you would like not to pay out. Sorry as an adult paying your own way in life is now a fact of life. |
