Ryan C | Council tax is for what purpose? ? |
emergency services + waste disposal?
To take power away from people?
What if I refused to pay on the basis that I'm not a criminal/speeding terrorist, The police are useless anyway, I'm not an arsonist and I don't intend on letting my house catch fire (besides, I might have insurance), I'd rather pay for private care for better quality and I dispose of all my own rubbish?
Additional Details Are you living in the dark ages?
There's these 'things' called torches. |

Emergency services, protecting you and your property from vandals; providing parks, swimming pools, art galleries and museums; cemeteries and crematoria; planning for the future in terms of roads, schools and Caring services; stopping idiots from building unsafe buildings; making sure shops, restaurants and canteens sell food which will not give you food poisoning; registering births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships; ensuring there are proper flood defences, and that builders do not build houses and work places sure to be flooded; making sure other peoples crap doesn't make the rivers unsafe for you to bathe or fish in; ........
They don't all do a great job. But they aren't allowed to make a profit out of you, and to decide to stop doing anything at all if they can't make money out of it because you won't pay enough to allow them to do so. |

We used to pay "rates" back in the 1980's - they changed that to the Poll Tax - this proved unpopular, so they changed the name to Council Tax. It pays for things like rubbish collection, street lights, street cleaners, schools, etc., as well as emergency services. Sure, you might dispose of your rubbish in a bin, but you wouldn't fancy going to the local landfill every week & dumping it yourself, which is what the binmen do for you. Plus, if you only went to the site WEEKLY, imagine the smell & disease that would build up in your home. |

I suggest you look at the website of your local council and see just how much they do.
How many of the street-lights would you have turned off to save your share of the costs of the electricity ? Will you refuse elderly care when you are 75 and ill, on the grounds that you don't agree with the costs of local government ? |
