zabeonline | Deceased person being billed for council tax (UK)? |
My father passed away in January 2006. He used to run his own small business, and rented a shop unit from a landlord. Upon his death, I informed the landlord and local council of this news, and immediately moved his things from the office, and gave the keys back to the landlord. Now, he keeps being billed for business rates even though a hairdresser has set up shop since.
This has now happended on more than one occassion. Each time I let the local council know that his business had closed, et they keep sending him bills.
I am getting quite distrssed by this as I know for a fact that is wrong. Any help woud be greatly appreciated. |

Friend, i,m from u.k too!
Lots of companies do this to people who are already grieving, it's awful i know but i think they've adopted the kick someone when they're down and if he dosent get back up, take it out on his next of kin method!
What i mean is, basically due to the time in which you're father passed away and the time it was reported(which is no-ones fault)debts have accumulated and someone wants their money by whatever means!!! In your case they target the greiving family.
Now the latter part of your question where you state that they are still billing him for his business rates is absolutely ludicrous and this will undeniably fall in court when they ask to see a copy of his death certificate, so i should'nt worry to much about that.
I sympathise with you whole heartidly and cannot imagine the anger you must be feeling at these ignorants, especially at a time when you have a lot more on your mind.
I do wish you the best of luck in solving your problem as i'm sure this will rule in your father's favour eventually!
I would also like to hear the outcome of this, so if you want to, you could let me know how it goes.
all the best to you and your family.

tell your local newspaper the bad attention they will get, will force them to act quickly even a national newspaper may be interested in a story like that and would shame them into speeding up the mess up.
Mention in the article you may want to sue for distress even though I am sure you dont as it will make all the process longer but they will listen the journalist will help to get the right angle believe me.
hope all is over quickly
dealing with the council directly will be endless red tape shame them |

Best bet is to write to them, enclose a copy of the death certificate, send it recorded delivery (so they cant deny it was received - youll have a copy of the signature if necessary), and tell them that if they do not straighten out his account, you will go to the local papers (they love this sort of thing) and your local MP. Then if they dont sort it, do exactly that. |

Write a letter or ask to speak to one of the local Councillors and explain the situation, hopefully it should get sorted out.

I would contact the local paper or at least threaten the council with it. I'm sure they wouldn't want that. |

complain, in writing, to the council and the local government ombudsman. that will stop them |

I would sent a letter to your local council (Finance Department) explaining your situation and informing them that a copy has will be sent to your local M.P., (get a proof of postage from the Post Office, which I think is still free)
I am sorry I cannot help you anymore. |

Wright to any press you can. name and shame them lol, they are crazy or just forget about it and just recycle the bills lol, its not your worry and it is certainly not your fathers.
Ps my condolences about your father. |

Send a letter of complaint to the council informing them of the steps that you have taken and the amount of stress that you are suffering as a result of their actions. Also send a copy of your letter to your MP and ask him/her to also write to them. |

How are you letting the council know, it's better to do it in person at the front desk rather than sending letters. Failing that, and this may send a bit harsh, notify them of a change of address and cite the cemetery as the new address. I virtually had to do something like that with an insurance company when my Dad died last year because they just couldn't understand their customer wasn't around any more.. |

go to the CAB and take a copy of your father's death certificate.- they will advise you. |

The fault is probably with the landlord.. He is the prime person responsible for the tax on his premises.. He has not advised the council so that their records are amended. |

Thieving wotsits.
Ask to speak to the town clerk. Speak to the engineer not the oily rag.
Government type offices are generally useless where nobody knows what anybody else is doing! |
