jess009
Dependant issues...
Before I get to my question I will give a little bit of a background. My dad and I's relationship is definitely dysfunctional. I am 23 and I live with him(part time college student. part-time employed)although I pay for everything besides the roof over my head. Yes I pay for everything else including my own college. I stopped being a full-time student when in 2009. Two years ago, he said he was going to have a tax guy do everyone's taxes since he was getting a discount. I looked on my return and noticed that i was getting the most I had ever gotten(about 600 dollars) and waited around for it to deposit in my bank. After some calls to the IRS wondering where my return was, they said it was already deposited. I double checked statements and never recieved it. I figured the tax guy was shady but called my dad. He said he didn't know and to wait another month for it to deposit. I found out 2 months later that my dad and the tax guy disregarded my bank route number and put my dad's bank account number instead. I never saw my 600 dollars even after confronting my dad. Fast forward 2 years later. I learned my lesson about having my dad file for me but now he is still claiming me as a dependent. I wouldn't mind since he provides a house over my head but I am not a full-time student anymore. Plus on top of me providing about 75% of my "care" which would disqualify him for claiming me. Well he claimed me despite me warning him and now I am out of my larger refund(600 dollars instead of 170 I would get with him claiming me) that I was going to put towards my student loans and debts. One might say that it isn't enough to complain about but since I provide most of my expenses I think it is only fair that I get my full refund. He has never been honest about saying he will pay me back when I simply just ask him to. How can I get my full refund without both of us getting audited? Or do I suck it up and lose my money?
