Did H&R block mess up my taxes?
I am 22 years old and worked all year. I made 13,000 dollars and my federal witholding was 1,285. I claimed my mother and my brother on my return. My brother is 17 but he is a full time student but they did not live with me I supported them by sending them money through the year. The lady who did my taxes told me that my income is too high for earned income credit? I know alot of people who made less money than me and got a bigger refund. I only got 1,100 federal and 484 state. is something wrong? please somebody that knows answer.

Let's get real here, at 13,000 you barely made enough to support yourself much less anyone else.

IF the lady who did your taxes went through the support calculation you would find you have erroneously claimed them as your dependents.

If I were you, unless you want that information confirmed by the IRS, I would leave well enough alone or file and amended return to claim the proper number of dependents.

Outside the box
The money you sent was more then 50% of their expenses, if not then you couldn't claim them.

Did you provide over half of each of their support for the year? If you didn't, you can't claim them. Or if one of them had gross income over $3400 for the year, you can't claim that person. Since your income is just $13,000 and you are presumably also supporting yourself with some of that, are you sure you sent them enough to provide over half of the support for two people? The reason I'm asking is because the IRS probably will.

Your income isn't too high for EIC. But in any case you can't get EIC for dependents who don't live with you - only a qualifying child who lives with you makes you eligible for EIC even if your income is within range. It's not just any dependent.

If you really claimed yourself and two dependents on your tax return, you wouldn't have owed any taxes so would have gotten the whole $1285 back.

So yes, on several counts, H&R messed up your taxes.

I would never recommend anyone use H & R block. I took them my taxes one year. I had a 1099 showing the interest I had paid on a home loan, they did my taxes and showed I owed thousands of dollars. When I ask they how they came up with that, they said that I profitted from the sell of my house. Now where did they come up with that?

back to your question, I have never heard of anyone being able to claim people on their taxes that didn't live in the same home and provide more than 50 % of their support. That is where I think they may have messed up big.

IDK, but I do believe you have to be 25 to get the earned income credit. Sorry.

I don't think you qualify for the earned income credit since, in order to claim your brother as a qualifying child, he must have lived with you for more than 1/2 of the year. Did he not live with you because he was away at school? If that is the case, then he will qualify since absences due to school are okay. Your income level does qualify you for the earned income credit and if your brother is a qualifying child, then you should be eligible for EIC of $2,853.

Your mom cannot be treated as a qualifying child for EIC purposes but you can claim her tax exemption.

She is correct. If you do not have a qualifying child your adjusted gross income must be less than 12,590.
Your brother is not your qualifying child because he did not live with you more than half of 2007.

it depends on what you claim at work as to how much you will get back..

with one kid you have to have less than 33,000 to get earned income credit, so im assuming with 2 dependents its more. yes, i'd say they jipped you. h&r block sucks, they are expensive and sit you down for a long time to pretend that they are doing something for you when it only takes 5 minutes for the actual work. i'd say find a local accountant who will actually hook you up, explain everything to you, and work to get you the best refund possible.
