Did Wesley Snipes deserve the 3 year sentence for tax evasion? Or did they just make an example out of him?

What do you believe? Do you think an entertainer who makes millions of dollars a year should not have to pay taxes and while we working stiffs do?

Do you not think there should be consequences when those rich millionaire actors willfully refuse to pay their taxes?

What do you think?

Maybe he can do a remake of "Jailhouse Blues" while he's in the big house and get even richer.

He wasn't convicted of tax evasion. He was convicted of three counts of "willful failure to file return, supply information, or pay tax". Based upon the amount of taxes he owed, the statutory limits on punishment, and the federal sentencing guidelines, he received the appropriate punishment. Remember, he was originally charged with one count of conspiracy, one count of making a false claim and SIX counts of will failure to file tax returns. If he had been convicted on all charges, he could have received 16 years in prison.

Edit: Contrary to what some people believe, there is a law that says people have to pay an income tax. Income tax laws can be found in Title 26 of the U.S. Code.

HE IS lucky he got THREE YEARS

v b
While I suspect he will try to pay the rest of the $15M he owes (he managed to come up with $5M in an attempt to avoid jail), he deserves at least some jail time.

He's smart, but he played the "I'm-so-stupid" line about not knowing he had to pay taxes.

He's rich, but he played the "I'm Black" line and wanted the trial moved because he said the courts in Florida were too prejudiced. He also claimed the only reason he was being prosecuted was because he was black and some white prosecutors wanted publicity.

He failed to file from 1999 to 2004, years he earned $38M. He alternated between claiming he innocently forgot to file the returns, didn't file because he didn't owe or that the IRS got the returns and lost them.
He filed false amended tax returns in 1996 and 1997 to get $12M in refunds. (The part that boggles my mind is that the IRS actually issued the refunds even though the 1040X forms submitted were clearly tax protestor crap.)

He wrote fake checks to the Treasury which he sent in with 1040ES vouchers and as "repayment" for the belatedly rejected 1040Xes.

He had employees and tried to stop withholding the proper taxes on them as well.

He used a tax protestor firm that filed returns and took 20% as a fee--an incentive to lie, cheat and steal if there was one.

After getting indicted, he conveniently left the country, tried to renounce his citizenship, "return" his SSN, and threatened federal employees. (In his 600 page protest letter to the IRS.)

Also sentenced today were Snipes' co-defendants. Eddie Kahn also got the maximum sentence, 10 years at Club Fed, and Douglas Rosile received 4 1/2 years.

No way did he deserve three years for that.
It's not like he tortured anyone.
Oh, wait ... that's legal now.
