sue c | Do Amish people pay incom taxes ? |
I heard people of the amish religion do not pay income taxes nor do they have social security numbers or pay ssi taxes is this true? |

they are law abiding citizens and pay taxes if they owe. They also pay CASH for hospital bills and doctors. They pay their debts and are extremely honorable, we should all learn from them. |

The Amish (as well as the Mennonites) do not pay, social security, or medicare - HOWEVER, they also do not receive benefits from any of these funds. They do not get money for schools, free lunches, Medicaid, Social Security, Welfare, or any of the other entitlements the rest of us have access to. They are also liable for sales tax, gas tax, property tax, road tolls, and other taxes the same as you and I are. I'd also like to reiterate that they are an honorable people, who pay bills, provide for themselves, and give more than they recieve in many aspects.
It is erroneous to believe that most Amish don't have much - money or otherwise. Most own property worth hundreds of thousands, and because they live simply, they save like mad. This enables them to never be in debt, as they believe they should have their money free to use as God asks, or as they need, rather than being in debt and owing to someone other than God. That's a really simple version, but I hope it gets the idea across |

I found a form on the IRS site that allows members of certain religious groups to opt-out of social security for religious reasons. They must also waive all associated benefits for life. The amish qualify for this option. I found no such option for income tax. |

This question was asked couple days ago.....my answer is the same....Yes they pay fed and state income tax..also property tax. They do NOT pay social security or medicare tax. Their communities take care of their own in old age or disability.
To Tax prince yes they pay income tax for both fed and state. |

They do pay "income taxes". As you might know, "Income Taxes" are separate from "Social Security" (FICA, SSI, etc) taxes.
The Amish do not pay Social Security taxes (aka "FICA"). They also don't collect from the system, even from Medicare or Medicaid. |

If they have regular jobs at places like factories yes, they pay all the same taxes we do. Typically the women do not as they do not work outside the home, the only thing that they are truly exempt from is registering for the selective service because of religious reasons. |

they stay out of the system as much as they can. |

ummm... yeah they do! if they make an income, they pay income taxes.. I work with them.. trust me.. they do! Just because you are of a certain race or religion doesn't keep anyone from paying taxes on their income in the US |

Most do not pay taxes nor do they get drafted, as they are conscientous objectors. They use no government services. |

They pay all the same taxes that you and I do. |

I'm afraid it is. |

I believe that basically it is because they don't really earn much money. They live on subsistence farms and don't do lots of buying & selling outside of their own communities. They probably can live in a nearly cashless society - except for their dealing with "us". So, if you were to look at them, I don't think many/any are above the poverty line - so if they wanted to, they would probably all qualify for assistance! (but they don't believe in it!) |
