Do I file as single or married?
I got married in September of 2005. But because I was single for more of the year than married, someone said I could still file as single. Does it make sense to do that? How will I get the biggest return?

If you are married, you should file as married. It is not a garauntee you will get a huge return whether you file single or married. Depends on your income and how many deductions you have and /or any dependants that you claim. If you and your spouses income is not over a certain amount combined , I think the limit is $80,000, thats together, I think you should still get a good return if you file together. Hope for a big return for you. Make sure a professional does your taxes this year since you are newly married. Go over the return after the process, and next year you should be able to see what to do and what not to do, you can do them on your on if you like.

You cannot file as single. You may file as either Married Filing Jointly" or "Married Filing Separately."

Excerpted from the instructions for the 1040 form:

"Single
You can check the box on line 1 if any of the following was true on December 31, 2005
You were never married."

"Married Filing Jointly
You can check the box on line 2 if any of the following apply.
* You were married at the end of 2005,"

if you got married at any time during a year, you file as married. Your marital status on 12/31 dictates how you file.

If you are thinking of looking at alternatives, you'll have to look at Married, filing Seperately -- not Single.

You can file married jointly or married single...
And depending on how much each of you made, just see which will give you a higher return.

You have to file Married, but you can either file "married filing jointly" or "married filing seperatly". All you have to do is plug in the numbers both ways and see which way gets you the most money back.

If you are having your taxes done, they should be able to check for you.
