karolinka | Do I get a tax return if my mother claims me on her taxes? |
I just got a job at Target, and I put down that my mother claims me on her taxes. I'm 18, but I'm still in school. At least I will be in April. Do I still get a tax check or what? I'm confused because this is my first job. Additional Details I understand the whole tax check being a refund thing, and I wasn't expecting to get a bunch. I just wasn't sure what was going on. Like I said, this is my first job. But I got different answers, as in yes you will, and no, she gets everything. So I'm still a bit confused. |

Your employer is figuring the taxes you may owe based on your pay level and the fact that your mother is claiming you on her tax return.
Your employer may take money out of your pay and sent it in for income tax. This will be shown on your check stub as Federal Withholding.
The only way to get this money back is to file a tax return. If you make less than $5,350 you will get all of your federal withholding returned to you. If you make more than $5,350, you will get only some of it.
In the unlikely case you make more than $5,350 and your employer has not taken out enough taxes, you may owe a small amount. |

Yes, you have to file.
You must file if you make more than about $8000 at Target.
You SHOULD file even if you make less. You may be entitled to a tax refund.
Just because your mother claims you as a dependant doesn't mean you don't file your taxes, it just means that you get fewer tax deductions. Your mother gets to deduct you as a dependant, instead of you deducting it yourself.

Yes you will still get a return. It will be less that it would be if nobody was claiming you as a dependant. There is a little box or calculation on the tax form that you have to use if somebody is claiming you as a dependant. |

you only get a refund if you over paid taxes. You have to file a W4 with the number of deduction you want to have. This will define the amount witheld on your pay check for taxes. At the end of the year and before April of the following year, the company will report your earnings to the IRS and you will have to file a tax return. If you overpaid you will receive a refund. However since you have declared that you are reported on your mom's taxes, your income will be added to hers and the IRS will calculate her taxes based on the combined income. Any refund will be hers unless she is kind enough to spare some refund back to you. To reverse this you will have to go back to payroll and tell them that you a single filer and need to have a W4. |

If you have income, you will need to file. If you are still your parent's dependent (as IRS defines it), they can claim you as a dependent on their tax return. Whether you will get "a tax check" depends on whether the amount of tax withheld from your pay is greater or less than your total tax liability. You won't know that until your tax return for 2007 is prepared after Jan 1st. |

You will definitely have to file and will probably get a small refund. It will depend on how much you make and how much in taxes are taken out. By telling them that you can still be claimed by someone else they will probably be taking out the maximum taxes, hence the refund. Remember that the "tax check" is just your own money being returned to you because you overpaid your taxes. |

In order for your parents to claim you, they have to pass all the tests. When you turn 19, you have to be living at home AND in college for them to claim you.
Until then, if they claim you, you can't, but you will have to fill out a tax form if you make more than $3300. You should fill out the 1040-EZ and be sure to fill out the worksheet on the back. You can still get a portion of that $3300 anyway. |

You might or might not. You'll only get a refund if they wothhold more from your check than you really owe for the year, so it depends on what you put on your W-4 and how much you earn. A "tax check" isn't some kind of gift from the government, it's just returned some of your own money if you overpay, like getting change at a retail store. |

At 18 you should file your own taxes. |
