Do I have to claim taxes if i made less than 8,000 dollars?
I live in california, and i am currently a full time student (19 years old). I wanted to know if i have to claim taxes although i made only $8000. is there any minimum to claim taxes in California?

Any help will be appreciated.

For filing federal taxes, the lower limit is $400 if you made that much -from self-employment. If it was from a job where you got a W-2, then the lower limit is $5150 if you can be claimed as a dependent, and $8450 if you can't be.

Those would be the rules for filing federal no matter where you live. I don't know about state taxes in California - somebody will probably answer that part.

Judy was correct about the amounts at which a Federal tax return is required. I have 3 things to add. As a full time student at age 19, you are probably still a dependent of your parents. If you had any Federal income tax withheld, you should file a return even if it is not required. That is the only way to claim the refund that you are probably due. I don't know California law, but every state where I do know the tax law only requires a state tax return if a Federal tax return is filed.

I don't know about the State of California: but federally, you will still have to claim your taxes, but you will get a refund for all tax that was automatically deducted from your paycheck.

No; But you should file so you get refunded what was taken out of your pay check in federal and state taxes.

Yes, Claim them..You will get all the taxes you made back.

Minimum is usually under $500. Other than tht you always must file.

You will get evrything back anyways, I think that your standard deductible will be like 7,000 and then since you are a student you can claim a hope education credit (if you are in your first two years of college) of the life education credit (whenever you are in college).

Look online for how to claim these, also your school should send you the information on how much you can claim.

Unless you don't want a $3000 check, then don't claim taxes. I was in the exact same situation, studying and low income (surprising how often those come together, huh? ), at almost exactly $8000 a year. I filed and got a little more than $3000. And you don't even have to pay the tax office if you choose to go through one, which I'd recommend. They'll take their fee from your return. The lower your income, the more money you will get, and there's more if you're a student. Just make sure your parents or nobody else are claiming you as their dependent.
