Do I have to claim this?
If I did a single job for a friend in exchange for $500 this year, do I have to claim it on my taxes? Does this qualify as being "self-employed?"

remowlms
Technically, yes you do have to report all income. Would I? No.

it has to be ova a certain amount i wouldn't worry about it

Legally, yes you have to claim it, and it's considered self-employment and subject to self-employment tax.

lou
Yes thats what I called self-employed. And you should claim it on your taxes. If its gave to you in cash and the other person doesn't put down in his records, you can do what ever your contagious tells you to do.

nealeclark
Just to be anal. You "declare" income, and you "claim" deductions.

To answer your question. Yes you have to declare that $500 and yes you would be self employed and file a Sch C on your 1040.

If they didn't give you a 1099 form to fill out..Forget about it.

Unles you received a 1099 form from your friend there is no record of it sent to the IRS so you don't have to claim it.

Aruna21
To my knowledge, you do not have to claim any earnings under $4,000 for the year. The $ amount may have changed since this was the rule back in like 2002 when I did my taxes. Check it out. I know there is a minimum amount for claims. A knowledgeable tax preparer would know.
