JD | Do I have to file a state tax return? |
I live in New Jersey, and have never filed taxes before(I'm young and my parents always claimed me.) I'm a full-time student in college, and only made $1,470 in 2006. I just e-filed my federal return with Turbotax, but skipped the state return because in NJ there's a fee for state returns. Turbotax wanted $25.95 and since my state taxes from 2006 were only $20, I'd be wasting my money. Also, I know if you make less than a certain amount, you do not have to file at all, so since I only made a little over a thousand, maybe I don't have to file a state return? Thanks for any help. |

If you go to Yahoo or Google and search "NJ Division of Taxation" you can go straight to NJ's Tax Department and browse their website to find out the filing requirements. In most states if you are not required to file a federal return you dont have to file a state. Because your income was so low I am about 100% sure that you dont have to file a state return, but you can always file on paper and mail it in to receive your $20 back in withholding NJ kept from your paycheck. |

Every state is different. Call your local State Tax place (or even just call H+R Block) they will usually tell you what and when you need to file. I dont think you do however have to file any taxes if you made less then a certain amount, you may even ask your parents if they plan on filing with you still as a dependent?!?! That also depends on wether or not they are paying for any of your student needs. Hope that helps you out some, have a great day!!! |

TurboTax should have told you whether filing a state return is necessary. If not, look at your state filing requirements online. If you are a full-time student, I doubt that you would be required to file. |

NJ requires you file if you are single and earned more than $10,000. You really need to check the rules yourself rather than rely on Yahoo Answers.
