Do I have to file for taxes if I got a W-2 form? My mom is claiming myself and my daughter, I am 18 years old.
I only worked for two months last year, part-time. I only made $1688.

At 18 your parents can claim you as a dependent. The fact you made so little would make you and your child dependent on your mother so I believe that would work. The daughter is a bit stretching but I think can work, even if she gets audited, they will realize she is paying for all your stuff.

VATreasures
You do not have to file. However if you file you may get back some of the taxes you had withheld. Since your mother is supporting you, she can claim you and your daughter as her dependents.

File and get that little bit of taxes you paid back! It's your money!

If taxes were taken out of your pay you will get back some of the money that was deducted from your paycheck. You did make enough that you are required to file.
File without claiming the deductions for yourself and your daughter since you are still your mothers dependents.

Yes, if you make anything over 1,000 dollars you must report it or else they will report you.

If you received a W-2 form you have to file with the IRS. You will probably get a refund of all taxes paid because you only worked a short period.

britni, look at your w-2 form and see if taxes were withheld in box 2(federal) and box 16 and 18(state) If there is a number in any of those 3 boxes you can file to get a refund, otherwise you are not require to file. Shoot you can even tear the w-2 up for fun if not filing for a refund.

I just did taxes for my cousin last night and called the IRS to see. If someone else claimed you as a dependant and you made less than $5,000 or the larger of $800 or your gross amoung + $250, the answer is no. So, your answer would be NO. You do not have to file.

dharden1205
Yes you do. If your mother paid for more than 50% of you and your daughter's living expenses, then she is entitled to the tax breaks. Make sure you claim zero on all taxes if that is the case. However, the good news is that nobody who makes less than $1500.00 in a year has to pay taxes. You will probably still get all of your taxes back.

yes, you still have to file, but can use the 1040EZ form and take the child tax credit, you should get money back.
