Do I have to file my taxes if they already deduct it from my bi-weekly pay checks?
Recent college graduate working a full time job for the first time and really confused about taxes.

Yes. The payroll deductions do not cover all of your taxes. They only cover a portion of your income tax. They don't cover any of the other taxes you may owe either the federal or state governments. Everyone needs to file taxes regardless. Believe me, it's not worth the risk of triggering an audit. My cousin thought he could skip paying taxes one year that he thought he didn't make enough to need to and he got audited. It was a really frustrating process that is even more confusing than just filing the taxes to start with.

Go to a professional like H&R Block or something and have them help you.

I wrote a short article to help people determine if they must file taxes or not, you can find the link below, hope it helps!

If you made over $5450 for the year if you can be claimed as a dependent, or $8950 if you can't, you have to file. What they deduct is just an estimate and almost surely not exact. And on the bright side, there's a good chance that they deducted too much, and if you don't file they'll keep the extra, if you file they'll refund it.

If you earned more than the filing requirement amount for your filing status you MUST file.

The taxes withheld from your wages are ONLY and estimate. You settle up with the IRS each year by filing a tax return. Most folks actually overpay during the year and get a refund when they file, but as long as your income is more than the filing requirement amount, filing a tax return is mandatory.

Yes.
You may get some of the taxes back.
You may have some deductions that you can take.

You can do it online or have some one do it for you.

Big Woof
Yes, you must. You are probably due a refund which means extra money. If you do not file and owe, then you could be in real trouble. Seek a professional tax person.

You always have to file a tax return

JSatt
Yes, you do. You could still owe money or you could have over paid depending on your deduction status. If you had more taken out than you owe, you really want to get that money back.
