Florida doesn't have a state income tax, but you do need to file a federal return and after February 3rd, the IRS website will help you to claim credit for the Florida state sales tax, which is normally higher because there is no State INCOME tax. Research WWW.IRS.GOV |

Florida currently does not have an income tax for individuals.
Federal income tax filing is required under certain circumstances as identified in other respondents answers. Check the IRS website for details: www.irs.gov. |

Federal (from the government's website noted below):
Topic 351 - Who Must File?
Whether you have to file a tax return depends, in part, on your filing status, age, and gross income.
Please refer to the "Do You Have to File" section of the Form 1040 Instructions, Form 1040A Instructions, and Form 1040EZ Instructions to determine if you are required to file a tax return.
You must file a tax return if you had net earnings from self–employment of $400 or more. This is your total self-employment income less the expenses paid in operating your trade or business, multiplied by 92.35%. For more details, refer to Topic 554, Self–Employment Tax.
If you are an individual who may be claimed as a dependent on another person's return, you are subject to specific filing requirements. Refer to the instructions in your tax package or refer to Publication 929, Tax Rules for Children and Dependents, or Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information, for the filing requirements for dependents.
You must file a tax return if you received any amount of advance earned income credit payments from your employer during the year, or if you owe any taxes, such as:
* social security tax and Medicare tax on tips or group life insurance,
* alternative minimum tax,
* tax on qualified retirement plans including an Individual Retirement Account, or other tax-favored account,
* tax from recapture of an education credit, investment credit, low income housing credit, federal mortgage subsidy, qualified electric vehicle credit, or the native American employment credit.
Special filing requirements may apply to U.S. citizens who are residents of Puerto Rico or who have income from U.S. possessions. Refer to Publication 570 for additional information. Residents of Puerto Rico should select Topic 901.
Generally, you must file a tax return if you are a nonresident alien with income from sources in the United States. For more information on nonresident aliens, select Topic 851.
Even if you are not required to file a tax return, file a return if you are due a refund.
State (Florida):
The Florida Department of Revenue's website was not as forthcoming. I did find a website that states (see URL below): Florida has no state income tax. |

Florida eliminated their taxes for individuals this year. So, unless you have a business, don't worry about Florida.
For federal, if your 2006 gross income meets or exceeds the following levels and you are under age 65, you must file a tax return:
Single $ 8,450
Head of Household $10,850
Married Filing Jointly $16,900
Married Filing Separately $ 3,300
Qualifying Widow or Widower $13,600
In general, even if you do not have to file a return, you should file one to get a refund of any federal income tax withheld from your paychecks.
There is a real good article here that explains the filing requirements in detail. http://www.internet-taxprep.com/plindex.asp?welcome=RG9900640&page=taxguide/text/c60s10d048.asp |

You only need to file a Federal return if your income was more than $8,450 or if it's less and you had taxes withheld that you want refunded. Florida doesn't have a state income tax for individuals. You'd think that their website would mention that fact. Oh, wait, it does mention that! http://www.stateofflorida.com/Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=29 |

YES: You have to file both taxes. Take your W2 to a tax preparer, this is the easiest way. Stay away from the quick return, wait for the money, it is worth the wait. |

You always have to file for federal taxes. If you made $8415 or more you are required by the IRS to file taxes now if you made less and have federal withholding (box 2 on your W-2) you could file and receive back whatever that amount was. If you don't have any federal withholding you are not required.
Now for the state of Florida i am not sure what the rate is over there because i live in California but you could go to the nearest H & R Block get your federal filed and while your there ask them if you are required to file for your state. I hope this would help you. |

It depends on how much you have earned and whether anyone else may claim you as a dependent. If you made over $3500.00 and are the only one claiming you then yes you have to file both. If someone (parent) is claiming you, you may still file but do not have to. Unless you are going to owe taxes, it is probably to you're advantage to file as you may get a refund. |
