Do I have to file taxes??? I am 17 and I worked part time?
I haven't got my w2 back but I think I made about 4000 when i filled out my w4 I made it to where the most taxes were taken. also does the fact that i am a student in college make a difference?

You must file taxes if you made over $600 in a year. You probably want to file taxes because you will get most of the taxes you paid in back.

Because you didn't make very much, you can use turbotax and file for free. Just follow the instructions on their website and that'll be that.

It's really not that bad. I've been doing my own taxes since I was 17 and I am 30 now.

I don't know if you have to but you should. I mean unless you file the government is going to keep all that money you paid in taxes. You could get a couple hundred dollars back so definitely file.

If you made under $5350, you aren't required to file, but if anything was withheld for federal income tax, you should file to get it refunded to you. And no, the fact that you are a college student doesn't make any difference.

Celeste
For that amount of income, you're not required to file.
Single dependents must file if they made over $5,350.
If you're not considered a dependent, then you must file if your income exceeds $8,750.
But you should, as you would get back most if not all federal taxes withheld.

Student in college doesn't make a difference. Part time doesn't make a difference. Being 17 might make a difference if you count as a dependent under your parents. I think you could *maybe* count your income under there.

1040EZ isn't that hard to do, just sit down with your W2 and do it. It is available as a PDF fill-in form online which makes it helpful even if it doesn't do the math for you.

You need to know if your parents claim you as a dependent (probably if you made that little) before you file to determine how many exemptions.

I think if you made that little money you should be getting most if not all of your money back as a refund.

if you are 17 chances are your parents are still going to claim you as a dependant. they can claim you until you are in your 20s if you are still in school. if they claim you, you will not be able to claim your $5350 standard deduction so $600 of your total income will be taxable. the only reason you should file is to get back any taxes you paid and it doesnt look like it would be much. you must tell the preparer that you are still claimable as a dependant since if you dont and your parents claim you, the irs will not accept your return unless you change it.

IWIU
you have to fill out the form and send it in.

halfzeimer
If you file, you are going to get back the majority of the federal taxes you paid in. So just for pure monetary gains, the answer is yes.

you rang
If you want a refund you should file you won't owe anything
and are not required to file.

Yes, you have to file taxes, but the fact that your a student will give you a lot of allowances, but you still have to file.

Paul W
Yes, you have to file taxes. Most likely you'll be getting money back, so it's well worth it.
