tl | Do I have to file taxes seperately if I haven't officially changed my name after being married last year? |
|
|

Sam
 |
No. As long as you got married last year, you are now: married filing joint/separate |
|

Judy1
|
No, you can file joint, just put your legal name on the 1040, 1040A of 1040EZ, whichever you file - it has to match what social security has on file for you. |

If you have a marrige license then you are married and you can file jointly. |

NOPE. You can keep your name or change it. BUT when you file taxes, use the name as it appears on your SS card. If you haven't changed it to your married name, then you use that or you can hypenate it. Jane Doe gets married and becomes Jane Moore, but doesn't file with SS to change her name, although she uses married name. Jane files as Jane Doe or Jane Doe-Moore (if W-2s show married named).
Your filig status does NOT depend on your name, just your marital status. So you file MFJ or MFS, and MFJ is almost always a better choice. |

You can file jointly - just use your "legal" name, not your married name. |

If you have filed some form with the SSA indicating your name change, you can put the new name on your return. |

No you don't. My husband and I have been married for 3 years and I still haven't "officially" changed my name yet and we always file together. Just make sure you take your marriage license with you. |

No. You can file jointly. Just use your maiden name . |

No, and you don't have to change your name. You don't need your marriage license to file a return. A lot of couple have their given last names. The return has a place for both names, so just fill them in and you're good to go. Congrats! Hope you file many, many happy returns!! |
