Do I have to pay American tax?
I am going on a (pleasure) holiday to America again some time soon and was wondering whether I have to pay tax on things i purchase there (i.e. DVDs).

i recall an American woman buying a t.v. over here (England) and not having to pay tax on it becasue she was on holiday.

anyone know?

Depends on what state you visit. Different states have different tax regulations. However, to answer your question, assuming you visit a state the imposes a sales tax, then yes, you will have to pay taxes. An American in the UK not paying taxes is not a good comparison. Each country is allowed to impose taxes or not impose taxes as it's government sees fit. Unfortunately for us, we do not get to pay only the taxes that we see fit.

America does not have value added taxes such as Europe and Canada do and therefore, there is no tax to rebate to foreigners who are taking their purchases out of the country with them.

You must pay American tax in retail stores no matter where you are from. You are talking about a large purchase and if you plan to do that you need to contact the American Embassy and they will give you all of the answers you need. May save you money if you contact them!

Everybody pays sales tax on everything that is taxable. That usually excludes only groceries and sometimes clothing, but is up to the laws of the state in which you make the purchase.

Christin K
You will pay sales tax when you purchase an item, no matter where you are from or what the circumstances. It is added at the checkout register when you pay for your items. We do not refund sales tax on purchases made here, unless the items are returned within 30 days to the store where purchased, and then we only offer partial refunds in some states.

Sales tax is a state-levied (not federally levied) tax. It's also a local tax. It's not considered a VAT like in Canada or England.

The tax issue is that e.g. VAT (a value added tax) is the last tax applied to a thing. Presumably, the person would be paying tax on re-entering the US and would therefore pay the appropriate local tax there.

Depends if you're stealing the items or not.

Dang
I do not think so. Just have to keep the receipt of purchase and return to tax refund center upon leaving the country. You will be refunded with the whatsoever america taxes.
