Do I have to pay Council Tax?
I am 19 and earn over £15000 per year. I live with my grandparents who dont have much money, and get their Rent and Council Tax paid for. Do I have to pay rent/council tax?

Gerry Atrix
Unless the house is in your name....No.

If you pay rent the Council tax rebate that your Grandparents get may be reduced pro rata.

Your best bet is to let them have some cash quietly.

I think living at your grandparents will effect their entitlement. ring your local CAB or pop into your local council offices, they will tell you more!

gavmel259
If you are legally staying there, whith the knowledge of the relevant council, then yes.

resignedtolife
If your grandparents are paying full council tax, then you won't be required to pay anything. However, if they are getting help with their council tax, then they must declare that you are living with them and will probably lose their rebate. If they do not declare it they would be breaking the law and could get into serious trouble and have to pay back the amount due.

Yes and when the council no your living their you will have to pay the rent in full and the council tax. good luck

?
No you will not be a liable person to pay whilst you living with them but they will no longer be entitled to having council tax paid in full. Their council tax benefit and housing benefit will be reduced slightly because of your income

You need to make sure that the local authority are aware that you reside there to avoid any overpayments of the two benefits.....and a possible fraud accusation

jester
No, but your being there will affect the benefits that your Grandparents receive and you should make that up (won't be as much as paying full council tax).

It is a "per property" tax, not a "per person" tax, so I reckon you'll get away with it.
