Do I have to pay tax on a car given to me from my mother?
I live in NY state.

YES!

I learned the hard way.

HOWEVER, if she keeps it in her name then that is the loophole...

You will have to pay taxes on it when you transfer the title to your name.

In Illinois if the car is a certain age or older, or the fair market values is less than $15,000 they have a Tax bracket, I think I paid like $30 tax because my car is 20 years old.

It all rally depends on the state, they are all diffrent.

If the car was signed over to you then yes but if the car is in your mothers name NO naturually you have to pay taxes to have the car tagged

linda w
No, at least here in Michigan you don't. Call your sec. of state & ask but I'm sure you don't. When you put the car in your name (title) let them know that it was a gift from your mother.

Yes. When you go to register it, you have to show a receipt (even if it is a gift), but the DMV will get you for taxes at that time.
