Do I have to wait for my W2s to do my taxes, or can I just use my last pay stub (Via Turbo Tax)?
WHAT INFO WILL I NEED OFF THE W2s THAT MY STUB MIGHT NOT HAVE?

IRS will not start processing any tax returns until at least mid January - there could be many things that will make your gross pay different from your taxable pay - 401k contributions, sec 125 medical insurance, flexible spending account contributions, the correct amount of withholding tax, state taxable wages are usually also different from federal taxable wages and you will only see the correct amounts on the w-2

Wait and use your W-2 form as it has complete information on it; your YTD statement may not be complete on everything and then you will wind up waiting, waiting, waiting.......

Your employers federal and state TAXIDs, for one thing. And the IRS will not begin processing ANY returns until mid-January at the earliest, so trying to do it early will not speed your return.

You can use pay statements for preparation but you will need your W2 for filing.

Smiley,

Usually there may be year end adjustments such as:

1) Tip reporting, if any
2) adjustments for payments for pretax items
3)when the company reconciles their books
4)employee taxable fringe benefits.

I would suggest you wait to file unless you feel like there will be no difference. You should e-file the return by the 7th Of Jan 2009

You can always attach a substitute IRS form 4852

The YTD info from the last pay stub will be (should be) the same as on your W-2. You can write up your taxes now before the holidays, when you have free time (ha ha). But you will need to wait until you receive the W-2 from the employer, before you mail in your Forms. I forgot to include my W-2s one year, and the IRS sent the return back to me.

One of these days the IRS is going to start imposing accuracy penalties on 1040x forms that are filed solely because the taxpayer faked their W-2 from their paycheck stub.

you can do any thing you wish. You can file now or wait. You need your gross wages and taxes with held
