Why Hello
Do I need to file?
I only made $1400 last year and I was wondering if I need to file taxes. I have been told that you don't have to if it is anything under $1500 and I was wondering if that was true.

Thank You
Additional Details
I was also wondering if I do need to file to get the tax rebate money.

Thanks again for all you help

If you were an employee and had any income tax withheld, you'll want to file so you can get a refund. If you're self-employed, you must file and pay your self-employment tax in with your return.

The guidelines on who must file can be found at www.irs.gov

Ramona
If you paid any taxes on the $1400, I would at least check and see if you would be able to get a refund.

If it was from self-employment (on a 1099-misc) then you'd have to file, but if it's on a W-2, no you don't have to.

You need to file if you are eligible for the tax rebate. You might be eligible for other things like Earned Income Credit as well.

So you spend an hour filling out forms. You can use Taxact.com for free federal filing.

Your income was low enough that you don't have to file if you don't want to. However, if you do file, you will get all the federal taxes you paid on your paychecks back as a refund.

Good luck.

You are not required as long as you do not have earned income greater than $5350, unearned income (interest) is less than $850, or self-employment earnings were less than $400.

Otherwise, you are required to file..

Hope that helps..

However, if I were you, it may be beneficial to file.. Also, try to claim lottery winnings, or other work you did for cash on your return to be eligible for the tax rebate.. You have to show $3000 in earned income in order to get an additional $300..

Of course, I am not advocating making up income, but rather, thinking back over any lottery winnings, etc which may have been won, or work you did for cash..

top40oldies
No you don't have to file, but if you had taxes witheld from pay you should file to get your witholdings back. Single taxpayers only need to file if their income exceed $8,950.

the real wana be
Just to be on the safe side you should file just incase

Everyone who earned any income has to file. Chances are you will get a refund of federal taxes you paid.
