Dixie Darlin' | Do Medical Bills have to be paid in full to claim on taxes? |
I know all about the deductions and the 7.5%, but the question I have is:
I have several thousand dollars due to hospitals and various medical offices due to a serious automobile accident I was in. I have been paying them a payment every month for about 15 months, can I claim these bills on my taxes, or do they only accept bills paid in full?
Thanks |

Any portion of the medical bills that you actually PAID in 2008 and exceeds 7.5% of your 2008 income can be deducted from your medical expenses. But the answer to your question is, if you paid it in 2008, you can deduct it on your 2008 taxes. |

The medical deduction is for how much you paid, not how much you incurred. |

It is important to remember, however, that if you charged any medical expenses on a bank charge card (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) the IRS considers the bill to be paid at the time of the charge. So if you charged a medical expense on Visa in 2008, and paid Visa in 2009, it goes on your 2008 tax return. |

You can ctaim the amount you paid for the year when you paid it, if you have enough to deduct medical. |

any money you paid to medical during the year is deductable, paid up or not. |

you can only claim what you actually pay during the year and then you have to see it THAT total is above the 7.5% of AGI level and THEN added that excess to your itemized deductions, you have to see if your total itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction to get any "income reduction" benefit from it |

Yes. Medical expenses include the PREMIUMS you PAY for insurance that covers the expenses of medical care, and the amounts you PAY for transportation to get medical care. Medical expenses also include amounts PAID for qualified long-term care services and limited amounts PAID for any qualified long-term care insurance contract. |

Whatever, you actually paid in 2008, you can claim.
This deduction is itemized deduction. You will take deduction only if your itemized deductions are more than your standard deduction..You can deduct the amount of your medical and dental expenses that are more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (Form 1040, line 38). You report your income AND EXPENSES for tax purposes on a CASH basis. No cash paid, no deductible expense. |
