James | Do Republicans want the Fair Tax? |
The Fair Tax is being promoted by John Linder and Neil Boortz. Boortz wrote a book called the Fair Tax Book. The Fair Tax will replace the Federal Income Tax. It's a national sales tax. All goods and services will be taxed at 25 to 30 percent. People living below the poverty level will receive a monthly refund check if they have paid too much in taxes. The Fair Tax will eliminate all the red tape involved with filing taxes because no one will have to file their income taxes. Americans won't have to worry about audits. They will simply pay a higher sales tax. |

I seriously doubt that Republicans or Democrats will support this. Here is why. It penalizes people for spending money. It rewards them for saving. The economy is driven by spending. If people don't buy cars auto workers loose their jobs. Wittiness Flint Michigan on a large scale. If people buy nothing to save on taxes then the economy will crash along with the market and real estate. It will cause a major depression
Most corporations and wealthy people who are also Incorporated save on taxes by deducting everything. They would loose this and pay heavy taxes. Now with reduced sales and big taxes industry would leave the country. It would be a disiaster. So no it is just talk. It will never happen.
Don't forget there already is a sales tax in most states and there is also an income tax. It is as feasable as actual communism. |

Some Republicans favor it, some don't. I like the idea of replacing the income tax with a national sales tax, but 25-30 percent seems high. |

I would like this. I would rather pay 25 - 30% on the things I actually consume as opposed to on my federal income. But I live in Texas and these types of taxes are already high here locally. I would need to get some local relief before I would support this at the federal level. |

You know the politicians will never go for it. They will lie, cheat, steal, and any other thing they can think of to keep from passing the Fair Tax. As much as I would like tax reform, the Fair Tax is a pipe dream. But we need to keep fighting, the imposable some times happens. |

That would only tax the poorer people more. A larger percentage of a middle class person's income goes toward purchases than a higher class. Also do we start taxing homes and cars at 25%? Do we start taxing services or just products. If you don't tax services you have people repairing and reusing instead of purchasing new, which sounds good until your economy slows. And then wouldn't people begin leasing and renting furniture, cars, homes, maybe even clothes. There is a way around it. |

Well, apparently at least one Republican is pro-fair tax – I’ve heard Boortz a couple times on the radio, and he sure doesn’t sound like he’s a Democrat. And at least one registered Republican, me, doesn’t think it’s a good idea at all even though I’d personally probably benefit from it.
The argument that is would even out the taxes paid has some truth in it. Right now, a married couple with a couple kids under 17, making 35K a year, will not pay any income tax but will be eligible for EIC of $700. I’m sure they’ll be thrilled to find out that not only do they not get that $700, but have to pay 20+% additional tax on everything they buy. But it’ll be “fair” – they’ll be paying their “fair share”
Yes, 20+%, even by the estimates of the people pushing this idea – 10% wouldn’t do it. OK, cut government spending drastically. Not a bad idea, but where do you start? Who’s going to decide what to cut? And who’s going to tell the couple eking out a living on social security that their income is going down and cost of living is going up? Or the college student that there won’t be financial aid next year?
I’m not saying that the current system is good. There is way too much under-the-table activity, and some of the laws don’t seem very fair. Many “loopholes” have been either closed down or at least cut back, but some still exist. And the system is way too complex, and most people don’t understand the most basic concepts. But is the answer to find a system that could be even worse? Take a progressive system and make it regressive? Doesn’t seem very “fair” to me. |

I'd rather see a 10% tax across the board, with no writeoffs. It would keep it simple. There also would need to be no exemptions and 100% enforcement. If they did that, it would be fair. I'm below the poverty level and I still think it would be fair. |

I don't think so because it will eliminate the huge tax write-offs that big businesses get. |
