cyndy | Do U.S. citizens have to pay taxes on money earned outside of the United States? |

Been there done that. Yes. You pay taxes in BOTH countries. The US gives you the first $80k or so "free", but you still get hit for state taxes and you MUST file no matter how little you make. H&R Block charges about $200 for this "special" filing. |

Not if "My Acme Company" earns the money outside of the United States of America and that money is stored in a gym bag that was forgotten outside a Wal-Mart at the moment you were there and you accidentally find the bag. |

You pay taxes where you earn it. They can't tax you again. |

Yes. You don't think the government is gonna let you get away with free money, do you? LOL |

Many people have answered, correctly mind you, but I am one that likes to have the actual source to read so here you go.
The first link takes you to tax law that says your first $80,000 is exempt.
The second link is for if you have to pay taxes to the United States you can take a credit for the taxes paid to the country you are currnetly in. |

It really depends what you are doing and how you are getting paid. If you are getting paid in their currency while working IN their country, then US tax laws don't apply. However; if you are working as a consultant or you are "self employed" it gets a little more complicated. The best place to get your answer is to call your local department of labor and or government office - better safe than sorry - you don't want to mess with the IRS because they will always come back and bite you in the *** when you least expect it. My answer to you is based on my background in Human Resources - I strongly suggest you call dept. of labor or go to www.irs.gov or www.dol.gov or your LOCAL dept. of labor. |

First determine whether the country you will be working in has an income tax treaty with the United States. If not, then you may be required to withhold entirely to the country where the services are being performed. Also, you must determine the intended length of you work in the foreign country because you may be required to withhold to the foreign country if you work in excess of the day limitation. By the way, you need to look towards the totalization agreements between US and the country you will be working in to see whether you will pay FICA taxes in the US or pay towards the foreign country. |

Yes. You pay taxes to the country where you earned it. You report the earnings also in the US, but you credit any taxes you paid to the other country. So you ultimately only get taxed once, on US rates. |
