Do employers in England have to pay you at a certain time on pay day?
For example if your pay is due on the 10th of every month, do they have to pay you by the time banks open on that day? My employer is claiming they can pay anytime up to close of the banking day, however this would cause my direct debits to bounce as they are taken first thing.

Thanks

They can be paid into your bank any time during the working day. More often than not my husbands wages are there first thing but occasionally they are not there until lunch time as they were today.

Your employer is correct. I used to work in Human Resources.

Most employers pay well before the due date to make sure money goes in on time so standing orders etc. can be paid.

If your employer continues to be a dick then ask the people you pay if you can delay by 2 days. They will probably agree but might ask you to make a one off higher payment for the 2 odd days.

C R
There isn't a certain time they have to pay you by.

Try to see if you can change the dates of your direct debits a few days later. This is a good idea anyway in case there is a problem with your wages going into your account sometime in the future.

In the short term if you contact your bank & explain the situation they may agree a small overdraft with you - this might work out cheeper than bank charges for your direct debits bouncing.

The other thing you could do is make sure you have enough in your account at all times to cover your direct debits, live 'within your means' and not so close to an empty bank account. I know this can be difficult to do though, and not possible for everyone.

Your employer is not at fault. x

If they say the 10th of every month then it should be in your bank from midnight 9th.

COLIN T
Your employer is correct. There is a simple answer, arrange to have your direct debits dated for payment a couple of days after your normal salary crediting day.

Unfortunately your boss is correct, although it sounds like his organisational skills aren't great; I've always been paid soon after midnight on crediting day.

Can you not change your debits so they come out a day later? I'm sure the companies involved would understand if you explained the problem.

If your boss pays you by bacs transfer this will credit your account first thing in the morning 4 working days after your boss set the payment up. If you boss sets up a same days uk transfer (chaps) this will credit by close of business on the day the instruction was given. So it depends how he choses to pay. Not very nice for you and your dialema though, i would speak to your bank to see if they can offer any advice on the situation. I bank with First Direct and there brilliant, nothing is too much trouble for them.
