Lisa Holler | Do government workers pay Social Security tax? |

Some do, some, notably teachers, don't. Federal employees hired since 1983 do, those before could opt in or out. |

Many of those who did not pay into SS get a private sector job after "retiring" from their government job, in order to qualify for SS in addition to their government pension. Many of those are unpleasantly surpised to find that the goverment figured this out awhile ago and passed Government Pension Offset laws to reduce the amount of double dipping that was occurring. |

Yes they do, however they did not use to years ago. |

Most do. Some pay into an alternative government retirement program. Depends on what level of government they're working for. |

When I worked for the quasi-governmental Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Los Angeles, I did not pay Social Security tax. I don't know whether that applies to all government employees or not. |

As an ex-government worker I can say resoundingly, YES!!! In 9 yrs of military service I paid the same taxes as everyone else who receives a paycheck. I personnally believe that ALL government workers should not have to pay ANY government taxes. His/her income in coming from the taxes that have already been collected and therefore being double taxed. |

Federal government workers do participate. State and local government workers may or may not.
State employees of Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada and Ohio do not participate in Social Security.
Local government workers' coverage varies as well. In Louisiana, public school teachers are not covered for example. |

Yes.
While I was with the Department of Defense (US Navy) I paid the same social security taxes as everyone else. Whenever I entered a hazard zone or combat zone, I entered tax free (that means income tax free, not social security tax free).
Everyone pays them. And everyone who pays them earns points toward collecting benefits. |

Yes they do. |
