It should say so in the instructions for your 1040 form. |

You have to be very careful when you file head of household on your Federal Income Tax Return. There are certain criteria that you must adhere to. First and foremost you need to know that you can only claim HOH if you can claim everyone in your household as a dependent. Next, none of those dependents can earn a gross income of $2000 dollars or more. So if your boyfriend has a job and makes over $2000 dollars a year your automatically unqualified.
If everything is on the up and up and you fall under the umbrella of the criteria I mentioned above then you need to look into filing HOH. Check out the IRS website for a complete list of what you need to qualify for filing Head of Household.
Just a note: If you do file Head of Household and claim someone who doesn't qualify the IRS can come after you for anything that you got as a rebate due to the deduction. That means if you can't pay it back right away you can have a lean put against your assets and garnishment of your wages. It's a tricky think - filing the right way - but with careful research you can file the best way for you and your family.
Hope this Helps! |

In order to qualify for head of household, you must pay over 50% of the costs of maintaining a household for a qualifying child. Otherwise, you file as single with a dependent. |

You can file as single or if you paid over 50% of household costs you can file head of household(HofH). Head of Household gives you a better tax rate. |

You should be able to claim head of household. It does matter where you live in some cases. Only 1 person at each address can claim head of household. Since your boyfriends parents are married they would claim married not hoh. |

How can you legally claim "head of household" when you aren't married, have a dependent of your own, and live with your "boyfriend"? Do you even work? full time, part time???
You are mooching off of his family, so they should claim you as a dependent, but since you aren't their daughter, and are probably over 18, they are screwed. F'n boomerang generation, get out, grow up, get your own place and deal with the real world.
At least you pay rent...Whoop Dee Do!
You should be filing single with 1 dependant, or if you work, check with them to see how many dependants you claimed when you filled out that tax form, 1099 I believe...The IRS will catch you, if you lie. Sorry so hrash, but no, you do not qualify as "Head of Household." (Unless his parents are on meth, work very little or not at all, and you pay the mortgage with the lending institution, utilities, homeowner's insurance, etc...) |

You can claim either, but single is the better and more correct answer. You also get the most money from it. |
