It depends on your contract. Sometimes you do have to pay it back,on some contracts it stipulates the money is yours if you return to work and leave after a certain amount of time

would any company want the resultant bad publicity resulting from a court case hounding a new mum who wanted to raise her baby ?

no, but my advice would be take you full maternity leave before you decide...........that way you wont loose any money. as son as you tell your company that you intend not to return to work you could/will be taken off the pay-role.

no the maternity pay is what you have rightfully earned, but make sure you stick to your contract before you resign.
