Do i need to file a tax return even if they are going to give me Earned income credit?
I made over 17000 last year and I dont want to file this year. I have one child and i know that i am going to get money back. Just a general question. Can I wait 3 years and then file all my back taxes? Thanks

Go ahead and file get your return and if you're not needing it put the money aside in an interest earning account...why let the government hold onto your money interest free?

File now. That's the only way you will receive the earned income credit.

You are required to file a return because your income exceeds the minimum filing requirement. You won't get in trouble because failing to claim a refund doesn't get prosecutors excited. Why wait? If you don't need the money, file the return and put it in a savings account where you can earn a bit of interest then enjoy the refund and the interest in three years.

If you don't file you get NO EIC.

You could wait, but why would you? Do you honestly enjoy giving the government an interest free loan? That's just not smart financial planning!

Assuming that you have at least one dependent child your tax liability is zero. You'll get back all that was withheld plus the EIC but you MUST file to get that.

The short answer is yes. Your income exceeds the 10,500 limit.

There are no penalties for you if you don't file (penalties and interest are calculated as a percentage of what you owe them) and get caught. But when you are caught you will take the time to file. If three years has gone by (and it will) then when you file you won't get your refund. The statute of limitations is 3 years to collect from the IRS if they owe you.

Well, the only way you will GET the earned income credit is if you file.

If you wait three years, you could still get your money - but you'd still have to file each year separately, so you wouldn't be saving anything. And are you that well off that you don't care if you get the money for 3 years? You won't even get interest on it, you know, since it would be your fault it's late, not the IRS's.

It is better to file now to get all of the refund you can. However, if you choose to wait, you will not be penalized if you do get money back, and the government will give you interest (which you will then have to claim on that years taxes). However there is a deadline (different by state) of usually 4 years, but it could be less or more. If you do owe, however, you will end up with penalties and interest that could be more then what you owed to begin with.

So in short, file now. It's better to be safe then sorry.

You should file. The EIC is big bucks in refundable credits. I'm talking about cash, boss! If you don't think you'll use the money, put it away in a Savings account. Or better yet, save in an IRA. You may not get any benefits from a Traditional IRA since your tax liability is low, but a Roth IRA may be right up your alley.

However, if you meant your getting Advanced Earned Income ... then you absolutely need to file, regardless of gross income.
