| Do i need to pay tax if i am selling used items on eBay? |

If you are sellings items that used to be your own, and no individual item (or set of items) are sold for more that £6k then the gains made are exempt and not liable to UK capital gains tax.
If you are buying used items to sell on ebay then you are trading and your profits are chargeable to UK income tax. It is no different to a second hand shop on a high street or a flea market stall.
The line between CG rules and income tax become blurred if you are doing a mixture of both selling your own used items and selling used items bought in as stock. If your stock is of a similiar nature to the items of your own you are selling then your own items become trading stock too and you are liable to tax on all of them.
E.g sell used fishing tackle but then decide to sell your own old fishing tackle. It becomes part of your trading stock (you can notionally sell it to your business though at market value) and the profit is chargeable to income tax.
If you are buying stock to sell on ebay, you are trading. Get advice from an accountant. |

You have to check your own country laws. In Canada, if you are selling your own personal items no as it is gonna be a one time thing.....if however you collect used stuff from others and sell it for a living, then yes as you have a business. |

It depends on how much you are making out of it |

If you are doing ebay as a business, you would have to claim your profits as income. If it's just an occasional used item you are selling, you're probably not going to profit from the sell very often. |

i think the key is--used--i dont think so.--if they were new you would be a dealer. |

You have to claim your earnings if its high dollar amounts. If its only $1000 a year or under, then no you don't have to claim. Anything over that, yes |

Hello,
I am very sure you don't, unless the stuff you are selling attracts V.A.T. like the selling of a second hand van, where the vat has yet to be paid. VAT is only due once on anything that is liable to vat, and the buyer has the right to know if the vat has been paid, but you knew that didn't you? I would say you are ok, but to make sure, why dont you ask E.Bay, or ask for VAT on everything you sell, but make sure you declare it and pay it, if it isn't vatable, the tax people will refund your payments, they have to, or it's theft of your money, after all, we don't want our government accused of theft do we, They Stole my paid up Pension, and I am now retired, and it cost me thousands, and they want to tax my benefits, CHEEKY HARD FACED Basta**s never mind, I expect I will survive Huh?
