It depends on how much you make in a year, even if it is your only source of income.

Everyone who is resident in the UK for tax purposes has a 'personal allowance', which is an amount of taxable income you are allowed to earn or receive each year tax-free.

This tax year (2007-2008), the basic personal allowance - or tax-free amount - is £5,225. You may be entitled to a higher personal allowance if you are 65 or over.

Check out the website of direct.gov (below).

It's called income tax and every one who earns enough money has to pay. I work for the Inland Revenue and every one who thinks they can get away with being paid cash in hand always gets caught!

yes unfortunately.

this mean you need to go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and search for a form called CWF1. this is the form to print off and fill out to get yourself registered as self employed.

once this form has been filed, the Revenue will contact you regarding class 2 national insurance contributions. this is currently £2.20 a week normally paid by DD on a 4 weekly basis.

just make sure you put a start date of say begining of October so they dont fine you for being 3 months late. its £100 fine.

then you need to keep records of your income and expenses relating to the business so that you can have some accounts prepared. use a year end of 31 march as this is treated as falling into line with the tax year or 5th april.

I would suggest you book a free consultation with a local accountant, they can advise you the best way to setup bookeeping to record all your transaction, complete your accounts and tax return each year for a few hundred quid.

hope this helps.

ALL income must be reported.

Yes, Its called self employed.

You are trading with a view to profit, so you are self employed and should register with HMRC immediately. You will need to pay NIC's by DD - a set amount each month.
The first £5225 of your profit is tax free, thereafter you pay tax at 10 and then 22%. It is essential that you keep accurate records of all your income and expenditure so that you can complete your self assessment at the end of the year. HMRC are v helpful and will give you advice and help.
